Getting the screen back allowed me to find the root cause. Thanks for posting the workaround, nvpham. The only thing I have left is reintalling Mavericks OS X, which yo be honest I'm afraid I will get stuck because of the black screen.

Naturaly the machine is out of warranty and if its a faulty GPU which means replacing the logic board which means replacing pretty much everything.

Try from Guest Account (discard a user-program related problem).Boot to Recovery Mode (which stays on black screen).Boot to Safe Mode (which stays on black screen).Remove the adapter and open de lip again, woala! now screen displays properly and stays working as long as you dont shutdown/restart. If I close the lid, plug-in my miniDisplayPort-VGA adapter, like if you wanted to use only external monitor. So far it would point to a faulty GPU, but here comes the strange part. Also every time I boot I get a Black Screen, but you can hear the chime from booting. I have been having an issue with my retina MacBook Pro (Mid-2012) where I can't get video output to work (HDMI, miniDisplayPort-VGA).
